NOME. Celebrates Spectacular Euromast Tower Live Set
Dutch producer and DJ NOME. has launched his career in a big way in 2021. Kicking off with some upfront tech house with the release of “Tonight” on The Myth Of Nyx, he’s quickly followed that up with a mega collaboration “Sucker For Love” together with Fedde Le Grand, and “Waterfalls” on Revealed’s Gemstone imprint. With such a fast start and so much exciting music ahead, we teamed up with NOME. for an ID loaded Spotlight Mix filled with his biggest IDs and original releases. Turn it up and go full screen to capture the breathtaking views from the Euromast Tower in Rotterdam!
NOME., thanks so much for joining us today! We’re so excited to share your Spotlight Mix today and take a closer look at your bright future! Could you start by talking a bit about your background in being a DJ and your set of skills in music production?
Hi guys, thanks for having me! As long as I can remember I have been into music. At a young age I started playing the guitar. A few years later I found out how to record the sound of my guitar on a computer, and that's when I started to add more sounds and instruments, which is how my first productions came together. Later on I started DJing and I knew I wanted to do this as a professional. For the past four years I have considered myself a full-time DJ and producer. In that time I have developed my own sounds and I figured out who I was and wanted to be.
This led me to do two Asia tours before the pandemic and play in countries such as Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines. That was pretty insane! After the last tour I quit my daytime job and decided to focus on my career in music. Up until this day I still feel like it was the best decision I have ever made, and also feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to live my dream!
What are the sounds that NOME. stands for today as both a producer and DJ?
At this moment I would describe my sound as ‘house’ with a hint of clubby tech vibe. It took me some time to develop my own sound and vibe, and COVID has played a huge part in this. This past year has given me the time to try things out and work on my own records. No doubt people will hear this in my releases.
Turning our focus to your incredible live set, where did the idea to record on top of the Euromast Tower come from?
My team and I had been brainstorming about recording a unique set using only NOME. tracks for quite some time. Several locations had crossed our minds, and at a certain point the idea arose to record on top of the Euromast in Rotterdam. The response from the Euromast team was very enthusiastic from the start. They were quite willing to help and I am very happy with the end result, so a big shout out to the Euromast management team!
Talk us through the process of turning the idea into reality and some of the challenges of setting it up.
In the end, a lot was needed before we eventually would be standing on top of the Euromast. The weather was the most risky factor (Dutchies will know). Partly because the drone permit had to be requested on time, we were stuck on a certain day and time slot. Fortunately there was no rain and sometimes the sun would even shine through, with the only downside of it being a bit windy.
Take us inside your thought process for setting up that set. How did the vibe outside play into the track selection and how does recording in an atmospheric set like this compare to a live set in a club?
Of course you miss the connection with the audience, this aspect was actually the most tricky part here. Compared to a live performance in front of thousands of people, since there is no direct interaction. The location is unique and you hope everything goes well, but this made me miss the live performances even more and I can't wait until we can go wild again in different countries.
What were three stand out tracks included in your set, and why?
Fun fact is that I only played my own productions in my set. I do have three tracks that stand out in my opinion. The first is “Sucker For Love,” which is a collaboration with Fedde Le Grand. I am of course very proud of working together with him and I think the record turned out very well!
The second record I would highlight is a remake I made of the classic “Love Come Home.” This record was a big hit in the Netherlands around the year 2000. To pull it into the future I gave it my own spin, so keep an eye on my socials for a release date!
The third track I am very proud of is “Waterfalls,” which was released a few weeks ago on Gemstone Records, also known as one of Hardwell's imprints. I've been working on this record for a very long time. The topline is written and sung by Jord Brinkhuis aka 'Jay Mayson' and I immediately fell in love with his voice and his melody. The first reactions to the record were very enthusiastic! Sam Feldt, among others, has played the record in his radio show. To start off the set with a bang I made a special intro of this record!
We’re sure you’re missing live shows just as much as we are. As you mentioned, you’ve toured extensively in Asia prior to COVID. What are a few of your favorite places to play?
Certainly! I miss performing and touring so much! Before COVID it went very well and I had great performances in Asia, among other locations. So far Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines are my highlights. Singapore especially because everything is super organized and the clubs look amazing. The Philippines and Vietnam are unique because the people there are incredibly involved in my music. The people there will go crazy for it. For example, you won't see anyone standing there with their back to you during your performance.
Collaborating with Fedde Le Grand on “Sucker For Love” was another career milestone moment this year. What was it like working with Fedde, and what’s your favourite thing about that release?
It sure is! I've always looked up to names like Fedde when I started to play music and especially as a DJ. To be able to work with him now remains a bit unreal. I met Fedde last year during a livestream event, and since then I've been keeping a closer eye on him. A few months ago I had a production with the singer Amanda Collis and our goal was to be able to attach a bigger name to this. I then emailed Fedde's management and within a day I already received a response that Fedde was very enthusiastic about the record and wanted to work on it. It took us over a month to get the track as far as it is now.
Talk us through a day in your life at the moment. How have you been maintaining inspiration and creativity? Have you changed your routine at all compared to pre-pandemic?
It may sound crazy, but during COVID I have been more motivated than ever before. I've been able to spend so much of my time creating new music. To give an example, I think there are about seven records left for the rest of the year. I also came up with many new ideas that I am still developing. It will make me just even more excited as soon as I can play my music live again. So I'm really looking forward to seeing what the future will bring!
And as we look ahead, what has you most excited for this summer?
I hope that during the summer, the clubs and festival shows will slowly get going again. In addition, I am very much looking forward to the new music that I will still be launching and I'm also working on some cool collaborations. It would be amazing to continue as it is now.
