Zerb, thanks so much for joining us with your Exclusive Mix! We’re excited to hear what you’ve been up to and what direction your music is heading. Reflecting first on the past year, what have been some of the highs, and what have been some of the lows?
Thanks for having me! Without a doubt, the worst thing about the past year was stopping touring and traveling to do what I love – which is to play and connect with my fans. On the other hand, I released a lot of new music and produced what I think that are my best songs so far and they are coming out soon this year.
Where are you feeling musically? What are the sounds that Zerb stands for as both a DJ and producer in 2021?
I believe that I'm now at my best moment musically. I'll be releasing my favorite songs from now on – they are a mix of what has always inspired me so there isn't really a genre or whatever you wanna call it. I think it's simply my most pure and honest music expression.
Talk to us some more about your latest release, “Trouble’s Gonna Find Me.” How did you go from the initial inspiration to the final production that we hear today?
The first time I listened to the vocal demo of “TGFM” I instantly fell in love. It was a rough piano and vocal idea that just sounded fascinating. I've worked on this track for four years – I had a lot of different ideas until I found the one that I think fits the beauty of the vocal.
Can you compare and contrast your production approach to club vs. streaming oriented records. Do you enjoy making one or the other more? Or do you find it's important to find a crossover between both with your tracks?
To be honest, I definitely enjoy more working on streaming oriented records and that's probably because I don't really listen to club records on a daily basis. However, regardless of my preference, I always make club versions of my tracks so I can play them live.
How did you approach your Exclusive Mix and how would the set compare to a Zerb live set at the moment?
It was really fun to play this mix, I've played a lot of mashups and edits of songs that I love. I can't really compare to a Zerb live set at the moment because I haven't played live for a long time due to the Covid situation here in Brazil. But I think that I tried to make a set that people could enjoy anytime of the day – mixing some famous vocal songs with the club tracks that I'm currently enjoying.
Looking closer at your Exclusive Mix, can you highlight three additional tracks included and why they stand out to you?
The first track that comes to my mind is the “Atmosphere” Remix by Vidro. He's a childhood friend of mine and I love to play this version.
The second one is the edit I made of M83's “Midnight City” and The Temper Trap's “Sweet Disposition.” They are two of my favorite songs of all time and I almost cry everytime I play it (lol).
The last one is my remix of Ookay's “Thief” just because it is such a fun song to play and dance to.
We’re sure you’re missing live shows just as much as we are. So reflecting for a minute, what were two of your favorite shows of all time and why?
Lollapalooza Brazil and Rock In Rio are definitely my favorite shows of all time. They were both my dream gigs and it's crazy to think that I did it at such a young age.
And as we look ahead, how are you keeping yourself motivated and on track? How have you adjusted your goals for the Zerb project and what are two things that you’d like to accomplish by the end of the year?
My motivation is and always will be the music. I love to listen to new music and I love the music that I make. The future is still uncertain here in Brazil due to the pandemic, so my goals are to release as many songs as I can. Soon I'll be releasing what I think are my most important songs ever. I had the pleasure to work with some of my favorite singers and writers that I've always dreamed of. I also hope that by the end of the year we will be able to resume our normal life here in Brazil. I just want everybody to be safe and together as soon as possible.
