Laidback Luke Celebrates "It Clicked" On Dim Mak Records

With the release of his new track on Steve Aoki's imprint, Dim Mak Records, Laidback Luke marks his intention to bring back the original nostalgic and rebellious Bloghouse sound! "It Clicked" will be part of his forthcoming EP, and to celebrate, he delivered an hour-long mix full of original tracks, Bloghouse classics, and fresh edits from artists like Chocolate Puma, Crookers, Knock2, ISOxo, Linska, Merow, Skrillex, and many more!
Hey Luke, thanks for being with us today to celebrate your new track "It Clicked" on Dim Mak. Let's dive into it! What’s the story behind the track?
Thank you for having me! “It Clicked” is about a pivotal moment in my career when I felt burnt out, uninspired, and stagnant as an artist. “It Clicked” is about returning to my musical roots. My big break in the Netherlands in the early 2000s came from being more of an alternative artist, bringing dance music into rock venues.

Last year, while on a plane scrolling through my old hard drive, I came across a Bloghouse folder, and suddenly I remembered that period. At that moment, I felt re-energized and realized I needed to bring it back to that era. It was time to reinvent myself and relaunch. “It Clicked” is the very start of that journey.
Can you tell us about the music video for this track? What was the creative vision behind it, and how involved were you in the process?
I need to thank my team for curating the video. They listened to my stories of reinvention—bringing back the old Luke while introducing a new Luke. It was about stepping back and reflecting on what people loved about me and how to bring that back. We leaned into me being not just a seasoned producer but also a seasoned martial artist, combining that with my love for tech and all things retro from the '90s and early 2000s.

You recently signed with Dim Mak Records. What drew you to the label, and how has the experience been so far?
I’ve always loved Steve Aoki and working with him. Furthermore, I’ve always admired the gritty and rebellious edge that Dim Mak has. Lorne Padman, the President of Dim Mak, and I have been friends for decades, and we started talking about my reinvention. As I pieced everything together—knowing how my new music would sound and recognizing the need for a relaunch—Dim Mak was the perfect label to sign with.

Steve Aoki has been a longtime figure in the industry, much like yourself. Did your history together play a role in this collaboration?
Absolutely! And since I’ll be putting out Bloghouse this season, I will refer back to Steve Aoki often. It only struck me recently how big of a role he played in the Bloghouse era back then—not just because of his legendary Dim Mak Tuesdays Bloghouse parties but also for his music. His collaboration with Bloody Beetroots, “Warp,” and his iconic remix of Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit of Happiness” are prime examples of what Bloghouse was and how it should sound. I’ll easily add the energy of our collaboration, “Turbulence,” into this. What I think is important to highlight is that I’m taking it back to pre-bass house and pre-Dutch house, as Bloghouse is where all of this sprouted from.

Your new sound marks an evolution in your career—what inspired this shift, and how does it reflect where you are creatively?
Artistically, it means freedom to me—being my unapologetic self musically. This last decade, I’ve been focused on chasing trends. Although it kept my career quite steady, artistically, I wasn’t there. I’ve been missing the Laidback Luke sound that I broke through with in the first place.

You’ll hear that “It Clicked” also has a dedicated Dutch house feel to it. That’s just who I am! And I had ignored it because I was afraid of the numbers. But I’m out of the numbers game now—it’s not about that. I’m here to reignite and claim my rightful place in history and the music industry.
Can you describe your thought process behind your new visual identity? How does it complement the music you’re creating now?
One of the first things I thought of when returning to Bloghouse and the early 2000s was bringing back the haircut! I used to wear it Super Saiyan-like, very prominently. It was my way of saying, “Screw the establishment.” And this is the energy you’ll hear in my new music—it’s rugged, chaotic, and energetic. It’s ready to start a movement.

Let's talk about your Spotlight Mix. Can you walk us through its concept and selection process?
The concept is to showcase what the sound of the coming season will be: Bloghouse. So, we have our dedicated classics in there by Crookers, Switch (aka Dave Taylor), Hervé, Larry Tee, and Princess Superstar. But from now on, I’ll be on a quest to seek out new names and new tracks that are, knowingly or unknowingly, putting out Bloghouse. You’ll find the best ones in the mix.

Beyond your current releases, what’s next for Laidback Luke? Any projects or collaborations you can tease?
“It Clicked” is part of an EP that I’ve been putting together, and I have a lot of music ready with that same rebellious and nostalgic energy. I can already reveal that the second release will be a collaboration with Nostalgix, who happily dove into that Bloghouse sound and energy with me. It’s a track that would fit this DJ mix perfectly, but other than in my live DJ sets, you won’t be hearing it here just yet.
