James Hype Celebrates Highly Anticipated Release 'Helicopter'
James Hype has been one of the hottest artists in all of dance music since the pandemic, and his productions continue to smash dancefloors as evidenced by his finish at #6 in the Top 101 Producers 2022 and his track “FERRARI” finishing as the #2 Track Of 2022! Today we’re turning our attention towards “Helicopter,” one of the biggest IDs in his live sets over the past year, and a track which marks his debut release on his own STEREOHYPE imprint! James, great to have you here today to celebrate one of your most anticipated IDs! What’s the build up to the release of “Helicopter” been like through your eyes?
Kind of long to be honest. The track was started so long ago, but there have been so many different versions and this is the final one!
How has the track progressed over time to the final version that we hear today?
The groove happened totally by accident, you literally couldn't write it if you tried… the idea for the track came from Tita Lau, but we both wanted to execute it in a totally different way. Tiësto was a collaborator on the track at one point too! How crazy.
Do you have any favorite memories of dropping the track in your live sets?
There was one show with a guy and his girlfriend in the front row and it appeared as though he was doing "intimate things" with his girlfriend in time to the breakdown!
You’re debuting on your own label STEREOHYPE for the release. What made that the right home?
This is my first ever release on STEREOHYPE so it's super exciting. I had to wait for the right track that would really shut it down!
STEREOHYPE is kicking off a new slate of releases with this track as well. Talk to us some more about what’s ahead for the label in 2023.
We've got some tracks lined up from some big artists making way more underground music than you've heard from them before.
You recently celebrated with your STEREOHYPE fam with an insane Get Closer live set. Where did the idea for that concept come to life and how was the experience?
Get Closer was an idea that was born from the live streams back in 2020. We always dreamed of doing a live stream with the fans in real life, but there were so many factors stopping it from happening. The first Get Closer set was so good, I can't describe the energy levels.
Reflecting for a minute on 2022, you had two massive milestones on 1001Tracklists. First your finish at #6 in the Top 101 Producers, and second “Ferrari c”locking in as the #2 Track Of 2022 on the website! What did those accomplishments mean to you?
The 1001 rankings are so so important because they're based on actual DJ plays so it was a massive honour to be so high up these lists!
Looking ahead, what has you excited for this year? Where are you drawing your inspiration and creativity from?
I've just got back from a week of studio in New York and I'm getting the keys to a new studio in London next week. All of my inspiration comes from the dancefloor, the same as ever!
